Water Conservation Initiatives
In 2019, Shoreview received the Sustainable City Award from the League of Minnesota Cities for its Water Consumption and Groundwater Awareness Project. This initiative introduced a community conservation portal, enabling residents to monitor their water usage compared to similar households. During the testing phase, this program led to a savings of over 8 million gallons of water, highlighting the community’s commitment to water conservation.
Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy
Shoreview has made significant strides in energy efficiency. The city has been recognized as a Step 5 city in the Minnesota GreenStep Cities program, the highest level achievable. This program assists cities in achieving sustainability and quality-of-life goals. Additionally, Shoreview has installed solar panels on the maintenance center’s roof, providing approximately half of the building’s energy needs. The city also offers two level-2 electric vehicle charging stations in the community center parking lot, promoting the use of renewable energy sources.
Innovative Infrastructure Projects
The city has undertaken several infrastructure projects to enhance environmental sustainability. Shoreview has replaced old, high-wattage streetlight bulbs with energy-efficient LED bulbs, reducing energy consumption and maintenance costs. The city has also implemented permeable pavement in various road projects to reduce and treat stormwater runoff, preventing flooding and erosion. Notably, in 2009, Shoreview completed one of the largest pervious concrete projects in North America at the time.

Shoreview actively engages the community through educational programs and initiatives. The Environmental Quality Committee hosts an annual Environmental Speaker Series, covering topics such as water quality, energy conservation, and waste reduction.
